IN PLAIN SIGHT:
Compositions by African-American Women

ips.jpg

On November 10, 2022, Flipside is proud to present IN PLAIN SIGHT: Compositions by African-American Women, featuring soprano Millicent Scarlett, pianist Dr. Darryl Friesen, and project consultant Dr. Marcía Porter.

For centuries, the art song repertory has been dominated by white male composers and poets, systemically excluding the voices of Black women from the classical canon. This one-evening event will be an illumination of a small portion of the rich and largely overlooked classical song repertory written by African-American women such as Florence Price, B.E. Boykin, Margaret Bonds, Rosephayne Powell, and Undine Smith Moore. These songs have been hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered and performed more widely. We are grateful for the opportunity to present them with the expertise of Ms. Scarlett and Dr. Porter, both of whom have done extensive research and performance of the music of these underrepresented composers.

Flipside is grateful to the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council for their generous support of this project.

We acknowledge that we will gather to share these stories on Treaty 1 territory and the homeland of the Métis. We acknowledge the generational harms of colonization and early settlers on the ancestral peoples of so-called Manitoba, and we are committed to acts of reconciliation and cooperation.
